Summer Reading Club

How it works

1. Get your Summer Reading Club materials. Register at any of our 10 branches. Receive a reading record to track your reading, a temporary tattoo, a bookmark and a prize draw entry. You can also request materials for family and friends.
2. Read all summer and set personal reading goals. We recommend at least 15 minutes a day for 49 days. Visit to collect your stickers. One sticker for every 7 days of reading.
3. Join Programs: check our events calendar for fun programs, both in-person and online.
4. Earn a Medal. Beginning August 5, after finishing your reading goal, visit your branch to pick up your medal and enter in our Grand Prize Contest.
5. Register online (optional): Starting on June 16 visit the BC SRC website and your grown-up can help you register. Set your reading goal, earn virtual badges, and participate in great weekly online activities.

What you can read

You can read books, comics, magazines or listen to stories or audiobooks. You can read in any language you understand. Download the free Libby app by OverDrive to borrow eBooks, eAudiobooks and even electronic Picturebooks.

Summer Reading Club helps children succeed

Summer Reading Club is a way for children of all ages to stay connected during the summer school break. This annual program at public libraries across BC is highly anticipated by children and families. By accessing these free programs, activities and resources, children can:

Grow literacy skills

Research shows children who participate in Summer Reading Club make significant gains in
reading comprehension.¹

Increase reading levels

Summer Reading Club helps children raise their reading levels by the time they return to school. This is especially the case for at-risk children.²

Enjoy reading and prevent 'summer brain drain'

Children enjoy reading more with Summer Reading Club, and research has shown this means they are less likely to experience ‘summer learning loss.’ ³

Better prepare for the new school year

Children who participate in Summer Reading Club begin the new school year with a positive attitude about reading and are more confident in the classroom.⁴

These are only a few ways children benefit from Summer Reading Club at their local library, and research shows the benefits are even greater for English language learners and children at risk.

Supporting BC's new curriculum

In addition to fostering a love for reading, Summer Reading Club supports and complements the core competencies in BC’s new curriculum. By providing space and time, children can develop their skills and explore their passions and interests. Children can also experience language and story as a source of creativity and joy. When children tap into their curiosity, this wonder can lead them to new discoveries about themselves and the world.

Kids of all ages can join the Club to earn stickers, virtual badges and a Super Reader Medal. It is free, and even younger kids can join and listen to stories. Participate in-person, online, or both. We have all kinds of fun in-person and online activities.

Summer Reading Club Grand Prize Contest

1) Entry Period

• The contest begins at 9:30am on August 5, 2025 and ends on September 7, 2025 at 5pm.

2) Eligibility

• Only children who complete their Summer Reading Club reading goal and who receive a medal are eligible to enter the contest.
• You must receive the consent of your parent or guardian to claim a prize if you are under the age of 14.
• Winners must answer a skill-testing question to claim a prize.
• Surrey Libraries and City of Surrey employees and their immediate family members are not eligible to enter.

3) How To Enter

• Upon completing their Summer Reading Club reading goal and receiving a medal, children will be given a draw slip for the Grand Prize.  Children fill in the requested information on the draw slip. The slip is put in the draw box with other entries.
• One entry per child.
• All entries must be received by 5 pm on September 7, 2025.

4) Prizes

• There is one, $100 Recreation Surrey Gift Card prize awarded for entries received at:
  • City Centre branch
  • Clayton and Port Kells branches
  • Cloverdale branch and Mobile Library
  • Guildford branch
  • Fleetwood
  • Newton branch
  • Ocean Park branch
  • Semiahmoo branch
  • Strawberry Hill branch

for a total of 9 prizes.

• There is one Grand Prize of a $250 Lego Gift Card for entries received from all Surrey Libraries branches. $100 Gift Card prize winners are not eligible for the Grand Prize.

5) Winners and Odds

• The winning entries will be drawn randomly.
• Winners will be notified by the phone number or email address they provided when they entered the contest by September 17, 2025.
• The odds of winning depend upon the number of eligible entries submitted.

6) Terms and Conditions

• By participating, you agree to
  • abide by the Official Rules and the decisions of Surrey Libraries which shall be final in all respects; 
  • release, discharge and hold harmless the City of Surrey from all liability, claims or damages, arising out of your participation in the Contest and the acceptance, use or misuse of a prize;
  • Agree to give Surrey Libraries the right to publicize your name in any advertising, promotions, or publications.
• Surrey Libraries reserves the right to cancel or suspend this Contest and cancel or refuse any entry or any individual winning the contest.

7) Privacy

• The City of Surrey and Surrey Libraries adheres to both federal and provincial privacy legislation.  Surrey Libraries is authorized to collect personal information under the authority of the Library Act and section 26(c) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.  Personal information is collected for the purposes of contacting prize winners.
