Give someone their first library card, help the library stay organized and inviting, check out or shelve books with Circulation Services.

If you are interested in more than one position, you must submit separate applications.

Casual Circulation Services Assistants

Surrey Libraries seeks bright, energetic and enthusiastic applicants to work on-call in all nine of our locations. As a Circulation Services Assistant, you aim to create an exceptional customer experience. You understand the significance of face to face interactions and warmly welcome everyone who visits the library. Your main responsibilities include: checking in and out of library materials using automated library software, dealing with customer accounts and new customer registrations, using RFID technology, handling monetary transactions, sorting and filing, promoting library services, answering general and directional questions in person and over the phone.

Basic Qualifications

  • Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends and peak vacation times (spring break, summer break, Christmas break and the days preceding/following statutory holidays)
  • Grade 12 diploma
  • Minimum keyboarding speed of 35 words per minute
  • Excellent English language communication skills
  • Excellent spelling and sorting skills
  • Experience working with computers (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Personable, with a desire to continually learn
  • Ability to effectively prioritize workload to ensure efficiency
  • Are physically fit: able to lift and carry books, push and pull carts of library materials and stand for 5 or more hours
  • Experience working in a retail or customer service position, including handling of monetary transactions

Customer Service Requirements

  • Ability to resolve conflicts and deal with difficult customer interactions
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with both customers, colleagues and superiors
  • Solution oriented and self-motivated
  • A strong service commitment, flexibility, and willingness to assume a variety of assignments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System as well as alphanumeric sequencing
  • Ability to speak other languages

Circulation Services Clerks

Surrey Libraries seeks energetic and enthusiastic applicants who love books. Circulation Services Clerks sort and shelve library materials, and keeps the library tidy and organized. You shelve and reorder materials in correct sequencing. You may also assist in basic clerical tasks, and at times help out with displays and program setup or takedown. You answer customer questions by providing directional information. Clerks work part-time hours at one branch but can pick up hours at other locations.

Basic Qualifications & Requirements

  • Available during library open hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Excellent spelling, sorting and filing skills
  • Detail oriented and organized
  • Able to take direction and work independently
  • Able to work quickly and accurately
  • 15 years of age or older
  • Responsible
  • Are physically fit: able to lift and carry books, push and pull carts of library materials on a regular basis and stand for 5 or more hours
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System as well as alphanumeric sequencing
