This critically acclaimed novel will break your heart over and over and over again, with no mercy.  It revolves around a group of friends whose lives intertwine from college onwards. However, one of them, Jude, is a bit more mysterious than the others, and much of the novel is devoted to his dark history and how he became who he is.  It is an onslaught of devastating events after another, but at the same time you will be completely immersed in their world of friendship and frustration. When does being a friend cross the line to becoming an enabler? I first found the book a bit hard to follow as the four friends seemed a bit indistinguishable from one another. I didn’t want to continue reading it, but was advised to make a chart of the characters so I could remember who was who, and that helped a lot. I’m glad I stuck with it, as I found the story to be deeply moving and heartbreaking and beautiful. But be warned, it is not for the faint of heart (Submitted by Alan).
